Bee Keeping and The Orchard
In May when the apple trees are in blossom, the orchard is abuzz with the sound of insects pollinating the trees. Honeybees significantly contribute to the production of a sizable crop each year which is why we take beekeeping seriously at Dorset Star.

Our resident beekeeper manages 10 hives in the orchard and offers various beekeeping courses depending on an individual’s requirements and experience. For example, for those with no experience the 2 hour starter session on beekeeping begins with some basic theory before heading out into the orchard for a practical session. This involves opening up and examining a live hive. Bee eggs, larvae, different types of bee including, often the queen, can be observed.

All equipment including a suit and gloves are provided. You will just need to bring wellington boots. The experiences are for a maximum 3 persons per session. Children must be at least 7 years old and accompanied by an adult.
Sessions are priced at £50 for an individual,
£80 for 2 individuals or £100 for 3 individuals.
Please note that despite wearing full suits and gloves there is a small risk of being stung. For this reason, the experience is not suitable for anybody with a known
allergy to bee stings.

Hives and bees can be purchased from us should you wish to take up beekeeping following a course. Full support is offered as you learn to manage your own hive.
